REPRESENTING THE POWERHOUSE OF LATIN WOMEN IN BUSINESS UNIDOS MAGAZINE BRINGS YOU

MARCELA BARNICA OLIVAR!!!

It became evident the moment we spoke on the phone, that Marcela was a take charge but humbled woman.

Her excitement to share her life experiences and her testimonies of what  brought her to this point was felt through the fiber optics of my phone.

Truly, an amazing world has brought her full circle with many that inspired her to reach farther than she could have ever imagined and break many barriers that women have endured throughout the years in a business mainly run by the testosterone of a neanderthal macho world.

She set her sights and broke through the walls making Powerhouse Bombshells a West Coast business with an East Coast flavor and taking marketing and music in a latin world, far beyond what she would have ever expected.......this is my exclusive one on one interview with the woman known to her piers only as "DVA"

you will know her as Powerhouse Bombshell's CEO/Founder Marcela Olivar only on

UNIDOS MAGAZINE

I'll let you know that I am from the east coast and lived in Boston, Ma but always visited New York City so my youth was of east coast urban roots. My brother (DJ Tito B) was a well renound dj from Boston and as a kid I was surround by music all the time.  He had gigs all over the place and as his little sister, he would have to take care of me and didn't let that get in the way of his undying love for music.  He would take me with him to all these jams and I would help him by pulling vinyls out and putting them back in the crates.  I became familiar with the artists, their music as well as there record covers which helped me find and locate the thousands he had in his crates.

It would put me on the forefront of what would be my journey and destiny in my life.

Through the music I would become engaged with dance and it would drive a passion in me that would turn heads.  The hip hop movement would play an intrikit part in my dance and I was fascinated by the pop and lockin, electric boogie, breakdancing and robotic moves that came calling as a result.  One day in the a Bronx park, I saw several B-Boys (breakdancers) with a boombox (large portible radio).  One of the dancers realized that I was interested in learning the dance moves and gave me a few pointers (it would later turn out to be the icon legendary breakdancer of the RockSteady Crew Crazy Legs) he would later become a friend and we still keep in touch today.  I would become a B-Girl and would embrace the hip hop movement with a passion.  I went on to Boston English High and was blessed to have some artistic influences attend my school like Jordan & Jonathan Knight (New Kids On The Block). Those days were very exciting for me and it would set the stage for what was to be.  I would eventually go west & the second half of my adventure would put me right in the middle of the world of entertainment .......California.  I would arrive at South Pasadena H.S. but as an east coaster it wasn't easy to adjust in the beginning as the only love I had at first was the palm trees (we laugh).  I would also have some artistic alumni as well (singer/recording artist best known as Shanice  & actor/host Jaleel White (Family Matters/Black Out)

Wait tell us about your family and where they come from (nationality)?

Wow!!, Now that is interesting cause my family is originally from Honduras and I come from an extremely political and judicial background.  Business was also a major part of my family.  My father (Raul Barnica Lopez -a law proffessor in the university of Honduras & became a Supreme court judge of Honduras, who retired in 2004 after he suffered a stroke & also served in the United Nations in 1965 sub secretary of state) and my mother (Noemi-an accountant) dated while my father paid his way through law school with his involvement in journalism (he had his own newspaper "Impacto" and radio show where he touched on various subjects involving Honduras, politics etc...).

I always wanted to be a lawyer like my dad and uncle but I believe that it helped me get into the entertainment business instead.  My uncle, Dr. Edgardo Paz Barnica was Chairman Of The Board in International Law for the United Nations.

As a kid I learned to speak in public which helped me a great deal later on....anyway back to my parents* when my dad was dating my mom, he would take her to the movies on Sundays and my mom took me to shows and ballet, I've even competed in dancing at the age of 3.  I didn't know about my artistic writing abilities and expression until I spoke to my dad one day about the family tree and I discovered that my dad was naturally very artistic himself.  One day in my grandma's home I found an art book of my dad's drawings and realized that I too loved to draw,.  Now this skill has been passed down to my son.  I do not know of my dad being a musician but he always loved film, writing, and media.  In Honduras he is one of the founding fathers of journalism.  There are only about 50 that have received that credit in today's history.  My dad always told me to be your own boss.  He felt the art industry was a tough one, so when I received my fashion degree he responded by telling me "what's that"?, "go get yourself a bachelors degree it'll benefit you more".

You know a parents advice truly can be benificial but can also put alot of extra pressure on a kid, so I felt that my fashion degree accomplishment was not good enough, although I went to a prestigious private design college F.I.D.M. which like F.I.T., Fashion Intitute Of Design & Merchandising (Heidi Klum does Project Runway through F.I.D.M. in Los Angeles) .  I then went and received my bachelors degree from the Universty of Phoenix on November 13, 2010.  I called my dad and he was very proud of me, he said you will see a brighter future, an education from a 4 year institution is highly merited.

When I need advice I can always call him and he will be very truthful.  I respect him very much,,,he is 81 years old. I truly miss him.

So you are now in the west coast? what happens next?

BARNICAS IN THE WHITE HOUSE... 1984 .. MY UNCLE DR. EDGARDO PAZ BARNICA AND FOREIGN MINISTER OF COSTA RICA TALKING ABOUT THE NICARAGUAN CONTRA ..MY UNCLE SEEKING PEACE FROM THE UNITED STATES...

Well, I would allow my passion for fashion set in and set my sights on an industry that would teach me first hand about marketing and give me a business mind set.  I would land several jobs and would tackle each one with a full business mind set with marketing, accounting, industry,

import/export, shipping and handeling etc....., Every job set me closer to my goal.  Touching the entertainment industry from every aspect (it was slowly calling me), Once, I even went shopping with Jermaine Jackson and that was and still is unbelievable.  I got married and had my son (Dylan Edward Olivar*12yrs old) young which made me a responsible mother.  I juggled work and motherhood.  I wanted my education and would not allow having a child, stop me from going back and furthering my education, especially during all the pressure there was with a separation in my marriage with my son's father.  I believe that I am the representation of being a single mother and reaching for your dreams.  Sacrificing sleep, work and recreational time.  With effort, I found my inner strength and spiritual self. They say that with sacrifices comes rewards and God gave me them each day, most importantly .....the Lord gave me patients.

With the many friends I've made in the industry over the years, i was able to utilize my skills and in July of 2008 launch my company and brand brand  Powerhouse Bombshells which covered marketing, promotions and managing of artist throughout.

My very first artist to join the Powerhouse Team would be Sami Cultura R.O.K. followed by RIK Indio, Spanish Fly, Rock E and with mentors like Lisa Lisa and my brother Mellow Man Ace, the ball got rolling and it started to become evident that this was my destiny.  Nelson Ruiz (brother of Salsa icon Frankie Ruiz) would also come in and this would be ironic as I went to school in Boston with Nelson and we would find each other as friends as well as musically.  Remmy Palacio would walk into Powerhouse Bombshells doing and working on latin pop. In 2012 we started my label, Powerhouse Music Records...and the awesome artist/producer Remmy Palacios became our first signed artist...Remmy was an artist from a freestyle legendary group called Nice & Wild.. Jessica Ortiz as our market manager and Marla G., Shannon, Trinere etc......... it has been a fantastic ride with the addition of Alyssa Jordan, Dominican Republic bachata sensation Daury Blue and the iconic Planet Patrol joining my Powerhouse Bombshells Music Records it has been a dream come true.
