INTERNET RADIO HAS FOUND THE FREESTYLE LAUGHTER & JOYFUL
PRESENTS OF DANCE MUSIC'S VERY OWN NAUGHTY BOY
This is John Rosario's exclusive 'ONE on ONE' interview with
SWINS FONTENELLE
....only in UNIDOS MAGAZINE
Take us back as far as you would like to go about your beginnings?
In the beginning I was a child in love with music and the magical charm of the people who sing it. My early memories are of singing with my father and little brother as he’d drive us to nursery school on his way to work. At a young age I began collecting both full length albums (my first being; The Wiz) and 45 records. I used to pretend that I was a Solid Gold dancer and would dance along with all the people on Soul Train or American Bandstand. I loved going to the skating rink with all the other kids in the hood and remember the great music they’d play, like Pat Benatar’s “Hit Me With Your Best Shot”. The 80’s had me in a love affair with dance music and when Freestyle came along I knew that this particular genre of music fit me like a glove! I couldn’t get enough of it and in time I became the biggest collector of Freestyle music on the planet; going out of my way to find rare and unknown 12” singles, albums and compilations. Freestyle has been the soundtrack to my life, but I do also enjoy: Rap (loved it from the beginning and my brother: Phillip was a breakdancer), Merengue, Salsa and Bachata. People who have known me for a long time, also know that I’ve always been in the alternative/punk scene (meaning: Siouxsie & the Banshees, The Cure, Dead or Alive, Depeche Mode, New Order, etc.). I’m not one sided, because at the same time; I love Sarah Brightman, Enigma, Sade, Rock Music and so much more. Truthfully though; my heart and soul are firmly rooted in Freestyle!!
Before internet radio and becoming such iconic voices in this business what did you do?
Well I can’t speak for Delisious, who was my dear friend before I asked her to join me in Freestyle Universe; but as for me, I was on the scene doing a whole lot of stuff. After high school, a modeling agency approached my mother about getting me to model and I thought that it sounded exciting! At that time, I was under the impression that I’d just be getting my picture taken (LOL), but I quickly realized that there was a whole lot more to it that I hadn’t anticipated! The director of the agency wanted me to walk and stand a certain way. I was wanted on the runway and in male model pageants. Being on my own at 18; I wasn’t totally in it and wanted to party instead of being a mannequin in a department store window or handing out samples or being in television show audiences. I was free and wanted to do things my way. After being part of the judging entourage at Philly’s Miss Lateen Beauty pageant and appearing in a few Puerto Rican day parades I walked away from making any effort in the world of modeling and in to the world of parties, clubbing, hanging out and having adventures! In the early 90’s I founded Philadelphia’s only successful Latin House. When I say “House” I am referring to what is known as a House in the gay world and one might say in easy terms that it’s a group of gay men that as team/family/group compete at events known as ‘Balls’ in various categories (the best known category being known as vogueing – I was not a voguer). These Houses often consisted of a few straight men and women as well. I was the Mother of the House, or the ‘Head’ of the House and it was called the “House of Mystique” (check out the facebook page here: www.facebook.com/pages/House-Of-Mystique/105717324838 Being ‘Swins’; I decided to run my House differently and looked at it as a business venture and enjoyed some notable success at the time. We were the grand finale at a very memorable Puerto Rican Day Parade in Philadelphia and everyone loved us! That landed us in the Puerto Rican docu-drama: “Brincando El Charco” with my best friend of 25 years (the father of the House) Ramon Gonzalez having a prominent role in the film. In the mid to late 90’s, Ray and I lived in Las Vegas and that’s when my real ‘Party Boy’ image blew up!! I must say that I really did put the “Sin” in to Sin City till there was nothing left to corrupt (LOL). I was more than happy to return to my NYC roots in 2000 and came back East with a dream of doing huge things in Freestyle, but I kept that tucked inside. I wasn’t sure how I was going to do anything and without proper career training (although I’d always maintained a job and had actually flourished with a very comfortable lifestyle) I was yearning to find a way to both enjoy my passions and tie them in something legitimate. The events of 9/11 were a catalyst for me to make some big moves and go for whatever it was in life that I truly wanted (life is not guaranteed and I believe that you should make the most of the time you do have and the best with what you’ve got). After that clicked in mind I really was unstoppable and have progressively been more and more successful in the work world. Now this whole time I still maintained my ‘Party Boy’ status but along the way I had to learn some tremendous lessons that I am grateful for and still work to achieve a certain balance. I count myself fortunate that I never went the way of drugs or anything because I have a natural propensity to overdo it with most anything I get in to! I am extremely dedicated to my family, friends and things that I feel passionate about (like Freestyle). All throughout my journey I’ve had this thing with writing and I’ve been encouraged by many people to be a journalist or screenwriter. Besides that; I’ve always been known as a party-thrower! I love going to them and I love throwing them/hosting.
How and What got you into radio?
Funny you should ask that! I was never a big radio listener. I like going out and finding the music and want to be the one that put you on to the hottest new stuff, plus I’m such a visual person! When things started happening, I was finding that I could really make a difference in getting a product I believe in with all my heart (Freestyle) more exposure; I just knew I had to go at it from all sides! “If no one else is doing it, I’d better get a hype going because I want these people to keep making the music…so I can still be able to purchase it!” I was enjoying more and more success on the club and social media circuit that it wasn’t long before I landed on TV with ‘The Aurelia Show’ on Time Warner Cable, doing regular segments and even a full-length hour special edition with at least 7 big Freestyle producers/CEOs: Sal Abbatiello, Carlos Berrios, Tony Garcia, MKG, Big Al Jankowsky, Artie Rodriguez and Willie Valentin; as well as 4 hot acts. It was Latif Mercado who first approached me about doing an internet radio show but I was extremely hesitant because I am not a technology savy type of person (I don’t even own or for that matter; want a cell phone!).
At any rate; the bug was planted in my head and I pondered on how I could do this radio thing. It wasn’t until DJ Lexx Sanchez out of Florida proposed a show on LOF and agreed to take care of all the techie stuff that I finally agreed to do it and it’s been so worth it! I just want the whole world to know about it!!
Why do you believe that as a duo on your Freestyle Universe Radio Show, fans are so connected with you both?
I think that they can connect with my co-host Delisious Deliza and I because we are just so raw and out there! They can identify with some of our experiences and they love the fact that we’re having fun! Laughter is all around us and we invite them in to our world. I’m sure it also helps that we actually are connected to the Freestyle artists, producers and venues also but that may just be secondary. A big thing with Swins and Delisious is that we are friends, that are more like family first before everything else.
All I have heard while doing my research are complete accolades why do you believe that is so?
That makes me feel good. I would hope that it has to do with the fact that I keep everything about fun. I’m in this because I love it and believe whole-heartedly in every bit of it. Life is about energy and if your energy is positive, you attract positive things. We’re easy-going people and we’re comfortable with ourselves and thus with everyone else we come in to contact with.
Do you ever disagree with each other off the air?
Oh yes!! I am a perfectionist and I have a lot of expectations out of anyone who signs up to be a part of what I’m doing. I am also extremely detail-oriented. Delisious is a mother first and foremost and she’s got other things going on that take up a lot of her time, like her enormous success in the comedy world. I am not a believer in keeping my feelings in when dealing with friends, family or people I’m doing business with, where as D (Delisious) shies away from confrontation. Where I am lacking, She seems to excel and vice versa. The most important thing is that we are deeply loyal to one another.
QUESTIONS FOR THE FANS TO ENJOY AS THE ANSWERS ARE THE FIRST THOUGHT THAT COMES TO MIND
What is you #1 pet peeve or dislike?
OMG!! Just one thing?? LOL..ok well I suffer from pedestrian/commuter rage. I would just love for everyone to clear a path for me and let me quickly get to where I’m going! LOL!! I also hate, hate, hate fowl odors to the point of wanting to puke! I also can’t stand being hot and sweaty!
Freestyle Universe has captured the essence of a genre and has been sustaining for quite some time, why do you believe it has such a fantastic following?
I think it’s a combination of things. The first thing is that Freestyle is the best music ever and we’re just giving it the exposure that it deserves. I always tell people who wonder why it’s not bigger that it’s very simple “people can’t like, follow or purchase what they don’t know about and most people don’t know where to look and aren’t really going to go out of their way to look”. You’ve got to get their attention in a world full of distractions. I also believe it’s because we tirelessly go to all sorts of means in getting that word out there about us and the music. It’s not just about social media but it’s being around town and basically where the people are at. Social media will only give you the audience that knows you already or that is already loosely associated with you. It’s a big world out there and the audience is just waiting to be found.
What projects are you currently working on, if any?
Well, Freestyle Universe became a legal LLC this year and I’ve been overwhelmed with all the paperwork and tasks I’ve had to do in making this move! We also struck a deal with the production team behind “The Aurelia Show” on Time Warner Cable in NYC to have our own 1 hour monthly television program to air in Manhattan, Queens and Long Island (hopefully we will eventually get all of the boroughs, New Jersey and Connecticut as well) but we are awaiting contracts that protect our interests before we go any further with that. We continue to make appearances at Freestyle events. We promote all the shows, venues, websites and anything that positively showcases Freestyle music. I tend to get a lot of offers for various things but we try to make sure that we can properly meet the other parties expectations and they can meet ours as well. Many things sound good but everything really comes down to long hours and hard work! Oh!! We’re also on the search for the next big Freestyle girl group! We’re looking for young ladies with the looks, the moves and the sound! Get these young people tipped to what’s up!
You have really worked extremely hard on promoting yourselves and the LOF/Freestyle Universe brand (movies, events, etc....), anything else Unidos readers should know?
I’d like for everyone to know that we all hold the power to really do something big in the music world and in society! Let’s get back to fun and being social! My dream of all dreams is to purchase this theater I have my eye on and to convert it in to “The Freestyle Hall Of Fame” that would include a concert venue, a nightclub, record store, a Freestyle themed restaurant, television/radio and recording studios as well as a Freestyle ‘Walk of Fame’. If I’m allowed to dream even bigger; I’d love to create a Freestyle cable channel (could you imagine? “Cooking with Safire” or “The Judy Torres Talk Show” I have ideas that include movies that have a Freestyle base to them, an annual Freestyle Awards Show, Freestyle back on the charts for certain and a Freestyle Broadway Show. Oh!! Can’t forget Vegas..so a Vegas style Freestyle show to headline there as well. OMG! I’m getting giddy! I was on the first Freestyle cruise ever (Tazmania Records put that one together so many years ago), it’s time for more of them! These are things that I hope to be working towards and I believe are achievable eventually.
For the Unidos readers and fans what would you like to say to conclude this interview?
I want to thank you so very much for asking me to do this interview. I am beyond flattered and if I can inspire others to just take a chance. Never live in “I could have” or “what if I had”. You may not always get to where you hoped you’d be but you will be all the richer for having done it and along the way you will find out so much more about yourself and others. You only live once, so make it the life that “YOU” want for youself and by all means; keep the energy you live in and surround yourself with positive!!
